Near-Infrared Therapy in Solana Beach | Light Therapy Lab

Near Infrared Therapy for chronic pain at Light Therapy Lab in Solana Beach

What Near-Infrared Therapy Can Help With

  • Chronic pain and inflammation
  • Joint pain and arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia and nerve pain
  • Muscle tension and injury recovery
  • Poor circulation
  • Fatigue associated with chronic conditions

What Happens at the Cellular Level

 1. Mitochondria absorb the light

Your cells contain mitochondria — the energy-producing engines of the cell. Mitochondria have a photoreceptor called cytochrome c oxidase that directly absorbs near-infrared wavelengths. This is the trigger point for everything that follows.

2. ATP production increases

When cytochrome c oxidase absorbs the light, it supercharges the mitochondria's ability to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate) — the primary energy currency your cells use to repair and regenerate. Damaged or stressed cells, which produce less ATP, respond most dramatically to this stimulus.

3. Nitric oxide is released

Near-infrared light displaces nitric oxide that has built up and blocked cytochrome c oxidase — essentially unclogging the cell's energy production. The released nitric oxide then dilates blood vessels, increasing circulation to the treated area and delivering more oxygen and nutrients.

4. Inflammation is regulated

The light triggers a reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines (the chemical signals that sustain chronic inflammation) while increasing anti-inflammatory markers. This is why it's particularly effective for chronic conditions where inflammation has become self-sustaining rather than serving a healing purpose.

5. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are balanced

At the right dose, near-infrared light produces a mild, beneficial increase in ROS that acts as a signaling molecule — triggering the body's own antioxidant defenses and cellular repair pathways.

Why It Works Better for Chronic Pain Than Acute Pain

Acute pain involves active damage — the body is already in repair mode. Near-infrared therapy amplifies that process.

Chronic pain is different. In chronic conditions, the inflammatory cycle has often become stuck — the body keeps sending inflammation signals even after the original injury has healed.

Near-infrared therapy interrupts that cycle at the cellular level by resetting mitochondrial function and regulating the inflammatory response, which is why patients with fibromyalgia, arthritis, and nerve pain often respond particularly well.

Near-infrared therapy's effects on chronic pain and inflammation are supported by peer-reviewed research documenting its ability to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, increase ATP production, and stimulate tissue repair at the cellular level — mechanisms studied extensively in photobiomodulation literature .
